We also asked Panton her thoughts on the kidnapping of Nicolas Maduro by the US, and Belize toeing a thin line between two of its allies. She added that Belize's position is even more precarious due to Guatemala's claim.
Tracy Panton, Leader of the Opposition
"The US is an important ally for Belize, and we often see that when the US sneezes, Belize catches a cold. But we also are in a very precarious situation. Belize continues to deal with the territorial threat from Guatemala. And, we believe there are certain things we believe in, right? We believe in your sovereignty. We believe in our nation's right to self-determination. We believe in international law. And we also believe the fact that, if you're right, you're right. And if you're wrong, you're wrong. And certainly we cannot countenance that any country, any sovereign nation, should have to be subject to that kind of what I refer to as bullying by a superpower."
