In other news, the Belize Communication Workers for Justice have been clamoring for their retroactive interest on their severance going back to their date of termination. We asked the auditor general for his opinion on their demands and whether or not they are eligible to receive such payment.

Anthony Sylvester, Attorney General

"So I regret I will not be able to offer a public legal opinion, so in caution, I mean lawyers really should not do that and of all persons the Attorney General should not be publicly offering advice one way or the other. And so, regrettably, I will not be able to comment on that. But suffice to say the government's position as articulated by the prime minister is that the former employees, they are entitled to the severance. The issue with respect to the interest, that is something that is still in negotiation with our ministry at times provides advice to the labor department. The labor department may very well be requested to provide guidance. And so it is through that mechanism our ministry or office would provide input on the matter. But other than that I would not be able to publicly make any comment."
