We also asked Musa about the first transferee that was sent to Belize under the safe third country agreement and what his Ministry has implemented to cater to those persons who come in as asylum seekers.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Immigration & Labour

"So as you know, a few months ago the Ministry of Foreign Affairs signed off on the third safe country with the United States of America. We have received our first asylum seeker a few weeks ago. That particular individual, I believe, is from Haiti."

"Our ministry plays a very critical role in the entire process. Of course, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has the lead on it, but our refugees department specifically, along with the UNHCR, are responsible for integrating those individuals into society, providing shelter for them, providing food for them, helping them to get on their feet with the different processes and integrating into our Belizean society."

"And so our refugees department plays a very critical role in the entire process."
