And while semi pro basketball is having its first season in two years, semi pro football starts its second season in less than a year this weekend. It's starts off with inter-city, inter-town, and inter-district rivalries on pitches across the country this weekend. It's called the RFG Insurance Cup, which is a bit different from the tournament which was just completed last month. The BPFL's Ruperto Vicente says it's still all about the game and the hunger for football.
Ruperto Vicente,
"They are crying out for the game, our spectators are crying out for the game. People need football and people are asking for the game to start almost immediately. Its spectators that are asking for it, they love it.
We have FC Belize in Belize City. This is going to be a surprising thing because they are very young players and we also have its new team from Orange Walk Alpha, coming out with young players and new faces into the league. So we are expecting great things from these players because there are going to be a lot of surprises. Coming out of Cayo we still have Verdes, Verdes is coming out with a lot of surprises too, and keep in mind that we have a lot of players who are idle because with Boca, San Pedro, and Calcutta being out, we have these players who are free and they are strengthening these teams so the competition will be even better."
This weekend's match-ups will put New Site Dangriga versus Wagiya; Kremandala versus F.C. Belize; Belmopan versus Hankook; Benque versus the Pirates; and Cayo Avengers versus Alpha.
