27-year-old Andrew "Bynum" Ortiz is a police officer now, but back in his earlier years, he became known to Belizeans as a 3-time high-school basketball champion with the Sadie Vernon High School's basketball team.

Later on, his talent as a baller drew attention as an up-and-coming talent in the National Elite Basketball League. And this weekend, he will be traveling to Mexico to play in the Yucatan Circuit Championship for the Las Pumas de Tecoh team.

It's a great opportunity for his development in the sport, but as an officer on the streets of Belize City, he says that he is hoping that he can open doors for talented but at-risk youths. Ortiz spoke about his impending trip to Mexico:

Andrew is being trained by Rupert Brown and managed by basketball enthusiast and activist Geovannie Brackett.
