Cricket, It may have been colonial Belize's pastime but for many decades it has taken a backseat to the global obsession that is football.

Still, Belize gave a nod to tradition this week when it hosted the Central American Cricket tournament. It did so as the defending champion in a competition that saw Belize, face off against, Mexico, Costa Rica, and the UK's MCC Cricket team for a trophy and bragging rights in the world of runs and wickets.

The Final game took place on Sunday and lasted for 3 hours and 7News was there.

And while the MCC celebrated their victory there was some sadness cast over the tournament's finale as one of Belize's most dedicated umpires, Herbert Escarpeta, a man who had checked himself out of the hospital to attend the final, passed away from a heart attack as he sat on the sidelines to take in the final minutes of his favourite game.

The Final Award ceremony saw all players pay their respect to the umpire and his family with a moment of silence and many expressed condolences.

Next year's Central American Cricket tournament will take place in Costa Rica.
