The Rose Classic Summer Camp, organized by Belizean American, Cleon Hyde, is this year celebrating 15 years of engaging children in Basketball, by teaching boys and girls the fundamentals. We visited the crowded camp today at Rogers stadium, as they moved into day 4 of the two week programme. The camp caters for more than 100 children each year between the ages of 9-13, all from different neighborhoods within the city.

Harry Grant, Director of Sports, Roger's Stadium Sporting Club

"Today is the, ah, the fourth day of Rose Classic. Every day the kids, they come and they get, they develop, they learn how to. The basic basketball fundamentals we need to teach kids them fundamental because most of our kids don't have basic basic fundamentals. The girls, we need to develop girls. We've never been doing nothing for girls and our girls."

"The WNBA is open at this time, so we need to develop our girls. So to give them an opportunity, you know, as you can see in all the kids jerseys, there's a number 15, you know, that's for 15 years of Rose Classic going on here In Belize. You know Rose Classic is been going on for 15 years with Mr. Cleon Hyde he comes every year Easter time for two weeks to develop the kids but after after the two weeks it's like we don't have no venue no way where we keep developing the kids now since we are at Roger's Stadium now I'm the director of sports there. We have the facility where after this is over now, we will get with the parents them and start to develop them at Rogers Stadium where they can continue their development, you know, so it's going to be moving in a positive direction."

Josephine Gabourel, President of Roger's Stadium Sporting Club

"Now Cleon Hyde wants to bring back the Fifteenth Annual Rose classic basketball camp. He couldn't be here. So he asked us at Roger's Stadium to help him plan the program for him. So we are here hosting the program for him. We were catering to 140 children, for some reasons we did not get the enrollment to the 140 children. But all of them have not showed up."

"And every day we get new children joining. So approximately, we have about oh, let's say about 88 children so far right now today and we're still accepting more children this week, but the cutoff point will be tomorrow."

And while the coordinators had their hands full with managing the camp, we got a chance to speak to the kids about their experience so far, and what they have been learning. 11 year old Kirsten Swazo and 13 year old Clive Medwood told us more:

Kristen Swazo, Participant

"I have mostly learned about dribbling and shooting the ball in the hoop. I have gained points for my team. Like around this afternoon, Around one we were doing this game and my team won and we got shirts and a head band"

Reporter:
"Are you enjoying it so far?."

Kristen Swazo, Participant
"Yes, I have. It's amazing. But my sister doesn't like it."

Clive Medwood, Participant
"I learned how to shoot more. The coaches tell me how to lift the ball more to make it catch."

The Rose Classic Summer Camp is free of cost and still accepting applications. The last day to submit and enroll is tomorrow.
