He May be Prime Minister, but John Briceno is also an 8 term area rep - and every year. He hosts a summer camp for kids from the Orange Walk central constituency.

Usually, he's the biggest celebrity there - but this year - the PM was overshadowed by a visiting NBA star.

Fred Vanvleet finished his playoff run in early May - and this week he travelled to Belize for some R & R. But this morning he took a diversion from San Pedro to Orange Walk to shoot hoops and drop knowledge for the youths of OWC.

Jomarie Lanza has the story:

The kids at the annual Orange Walk Central Summer Camp welcomed a special surprise guest today when they got to shoot hoops and hear from NBA player Fred VanVleet of the Houston Rockets.

VanVleet - who is vacationing in Belize - got a special invite to join the head of government at the opening of the camp - and impress them with his wisdom and his three point making ability. He says it was an honour for him to stop in and meet the children.

Fred VanVleet, Professional Basketball Player, Houston Rockets:
"It's great its a blessing, its an honour to be here to be invited here, obviously with Mr Briceno being here and spending some time with the kids we got invited to come and say hello and take a couple of pictures and just to come in and share some time with the children and so it's good."

"I got a great platform and I'm in a position to be able to help and give back but basketball is my first love and you know helping out children is probably my second love so being able to be here and talk to the kids this was great for me."

And while the NBA star was the one signing autographs, the main man in this area is Area Rep Johnny Briceno who donned his shorts and tennis shoes to spend some time with the kids. And he says he doesn't just dress the part - he actually gets involved:

John Briceno, Prime Minister:
"Actually I have a sense of pride that I can still keep up with these kids, not for the entire day but at least during the time when we are exercising. As you know we have a long history every summer. We have been doing this for more than 25 years and as always it gives you immense pleasure to see these kids here playing and when I see some of them I realise that their parents were here and now their children are coming to this summer camp. As I tell all these kids it is a time for them to meet up with their friends. Make new friends, learn to play a sport, learn about team building, learn about cooperating and helping one another and so it's a time for learning and having fun."

The camp had the attendance of up to 200 children.

Vanvleet isn't the only famous athlete touring the country for the summer. Sergio Ramos, a Real Madrid legend now playing in Mexico is also in Belize.
