Earlier we told you that all rivers in the south are flooded. At the top of that list is the Sittee River whose fury has wiped out the temporary causeway at the Kendall Bridge. That means anywhere south of the Kendall crossing is cut off from the rest of the country – at least by vehicle. Here’s the story.
Keith Swift Reporting,
Today as the mighty Sittee River roared, there was no sign of the temporary causeway at the Kendall crossing. There was however a long line of vehicles

– most of them cargo trucks – waiting but unable to cross.
Estevan Baeza, Stranded at Kendall Crossing
“We come from Orange Walk. We’ve been here from four o’clock in the morning. We were headed to Maya King to fill up bananas but we can’t pass right now due to the flood and right now we are waiting but it is showing signs that it is going down but it is just time that we are waiting on. We need to go but the last time this flood happened we used the speeding boats that they are using now to carry our equipment but we don’t want to do that, we prefer to wait now.”
Keith Swift,
How long are you prepared to wait?
Estevan Baeza,
“Well we are estimating until at least tomorrow morning. We are planning to camp out, we already have food and everything.”
George Krohn, From Spanish Lookout
“We want to go to Mango Creek.”
Keith Swift,
How long have you been waiting here?
George Krohn,
“From 6:30 in the morning. We need to pass.”
Keith Swift,
What are you delivering?
George Krohn,
“Cream and cheese and

chicken.”
And while the chicken couldn’t get across, people did. This newborn baby and these newlyweds on their honeymoon were ferried across on small boats.
Taylor and Joshan Miller, Tourists
“The bridge is gone.”
Keith Swift,
You don’t mind the extra hassle?
Taylor and Joshan Miller,
“We don’t mind, as long as we get over there.”
Keith Swift,
So this is like part of the whole experience for you?
Taylor and Joshan Miller,
“Adventure sure, you better Belize it.”
The truckers may be camped out at the Kendall crossing all of tonight. The Met Department expects the rain to continue throughout the night. The Ministry of Works hasn’t reported any other major road or bridge closures due to the rain.
