South of that, there’s Gracie Rock and tonight residents in that small village are on “wait and see” status. Their eyes are on the Sibun River which has been rising steadily since morning. And nobody is watching the river more closely than Laurel Young. Like most of Gracie Rock’s 125 residents, she lives on the banks of the Sibun River. It rose sharply on Sunday and she worries it will rise again.
Laurel Young, Gracie Rock Resident
“The situation is that the river is rising again. We had high water

since Sunday but it fell off and since this morning it started to rise rapidly.”
Keith Swift,
What is your plan?
Laurel Young,
“My plan is just to watch the river and if I should make a move, I will go over by the school.”
Keith Swift,
Are you concerned?
Laurel Young,
“I do concerned because it will affect our crops in our village and most of us live off our plantations, the sand from the river, and otherwise men work in the village as tourism. We have two tourism site in here.”
Keith Swift,
Why haven’t you left?
Laurel Young,
“Because I have confidence in God and once you have that, you know you pray a lot and just ask God to guide you all and if you should have to move then you know you should have to move. You don’t resist.”
Gracie Rock is about 20 miles from Belize City.
