Belize is preparing for the start of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season, which officially begins on Monday June 1 and runs through November 30. According to the National Meteorological Service, forecasters are predicting a slightly below normal season, with between eight and fourteen named storms expected to form in the Atlantic Basin. Of those systems, three to six could strengthen into hurricanes, while one to three may become major hurricanes classified as Category 3 or stronger. Experts say a strong El Niño is likely to develop during the season, a condition that usually suppresses hurricane activity in the Atlantic. However, warmer than average sea surface temperatures across the basin could still provide enough energy to fuel storm development. Despite the forecast for reduced activity, officials are reminding Belizeans that it only takes one storm to have a major impact on the country. NEMO and the MET Service are urging residents to review and update their emergency plans for families, businesses, and communities ahead of the season.
