If you're going on a long drive over the Easter weekend - try to buy your gas tonight.

That's the best advice we can give you as 7NEWS has received credible reports, which say that the Petroleum Haulers Association is going on strike tomorrow. If the strike holds, that means that no fuel will be supplied over the 5 day weekend and gas stations countrywide will run out almost certainly by the end of the weekend - many of them much before that.

And the crisis could go beyond that - because the problem appears intractable. The dispute is between the multinational fuel companies Texaco, Shell and Esso which refuse to have the association dictate what haulers it should use. In the past, the association would independently contract its own haulers. It's a freedom that the fuel companies now refuse to relinquish - and until some long-term compromise is reached, the fuel supply will come under sustained threat.
