With disappearing global markets and diminishing returns it's a dread time in the sugar industry and it's looking to get more so as BSI factory employees today went on a go-slow.
The announcement of industrial action came after BSI management told the Belize Worker's Union, which represents the factory workers, that it planned to implement a wage freeze for all its employees. Union membership flatly rejected the proposal at a meeting today and this afternoon 150 factory workers staged a peaceful protest, walking from the town entrance into the park at the heart of Orange Walk town. The union also announced that it will embark on a go-slow, and boycott BSI's annual general meeting.
Because the information came out late this evening we were unable to reach BSI executives for comment.
