As many as 240 Belize City Council sanitation workers are tonight concerned and anxious about their job security after they were told that the city council is privatizing its sanitation department.
The ‘P-word' was uttered to the workers at a meeting this afternoon by City Councilor Eloisa Trujeque at Saint Mary's Parish Hall.
After the meeting, the workers gathered outside expressing varying levels of discontent. Kenrick Cumberbatch says that all 240 workers share a common fear of losing their jobs.
Kenrick Cumberbatch, Sanitation Supervisor
"The workers they are not satisfied with whatever they said about the privatization because they wanted it to be proposed but instead they weren't asked it was just put to them so no one was happy about what came out of the meeting."
What's the fear about privatization?
Kenrick Cumberbatch,
"Because we have seen it already through SEL and when that was privatized, many of them left the city council to go work for SEL and they ended up without a job and they ended up right back on the streets doing the same thing they used to do before."
No one from the city council responded to our request for comment today.
