On the second of this month, a handful of workers at the Port of Belize Limited complained and protested because they wanted out of a pension plan from which they were not being allowed to draw money. It seems now that they have gotten what they requested and today a joint press release from the Port of Belize Limited and the Christian Workers Union states that the pension fund has been dissolved. The reasons cited include the fact that the majority of the staff wanted out and that resignation by members has eroded the majority participation in the plan. With this, the plan has been terminated, and what's was paid in, will be paid back out with interest in some cases. Contributors will receive varying benefits depending on the number of years they paid into the pension plan.
