Through a partnership between the International Labour Organization and the Belize Chamber of Commerce, a number of small and medium sized businesses will be movin' on up to the big time. What we call "the big time," they call the formal sector, and what we call "movin up," they call capacity building. The Chamber's Dionne Miranda explains.

“This is where we actually come up with a training resource center. We asked within the survey what areas of training you need. They’ve for human resource development, they’ve asked for customer service, marketing, public relations, occupational safety and health, and many different areas. This is the second such thing that we are delivering for the ILO project and hopefully this will be something that we can actually deliver in a sustainable manner to membership and to other people because this membership is not just opened to Chamber members, its actually opened to the entire Belizean public. So what we’re trying to do is build capacity within small and medium enterprise so that they can actually be able to compete against larger companies within the environment who can actually afford to have trainers in place, to have training sections available, and have trainers on hand at all times.”

A second seminar like the one held today will be held in October. These sessions are open to the public.
