Will there be a flour shortage for Christmas?
That’s what some suppliers have been calling us to say because ADM
Belize Flour Mills has been restricting flour sales to some large
customers.
But we’ve found out that it’s not a shortage – at least not yet.
An ADM Belize Mills representative explained that because the
controlled price of flour in Belize is significantly lower than it is
Mexico and Guatemala – they suspect that some of Belize’s supply is
going across the border.
That’s caused a spike in sales and it’s created a wheat shortage at
ADM.
Now Belize’s only flour producer has been forced to truck in wheat
from Guatemala to make sure it doesn’t run out of flour.
The first truckloads of that were scheduled to arrive today – and
ADM is hoping that the arrangement holds out until the next full
grain shipment arrives sometime around Christmas.
Until then sales to suppliers will be restricted based on their
average consumption in the past year. So they will get what ADM
believes they need, not what they want, basically a rationed
supply.
But, as we have been made to understand it, there are no
restrictions on the supply to bakers – so it should not affect
bread production.
