A super store in the heart of San Pedro was devoured in a blaze which burned from last night right up until this afternoon. Around 11:30, fire authorities got the call saying that Wings Store on Coconut Drive near the airstrip was
on fire.
It’s a large store and warehouse in the center of the town near the airstrip – and San Pedro’s Fire Department had to call for back up. At 2:30 in the morning additional crew from Belize City came in a BDF Defender. They brought the blaze under control and contained it but because the fire started from deep within the warehouse, the team could not get to it. And that’s why the smoke continued to stream out and the firefight continued until the afternoon. Because of the thick impenetrable black smoke that enveloped the warehouse they couldn’t get to the source of the fire.
Eventually the fire team had to break through a wall to get to the area where the fire started. The store is completely destroyed by water damage and the warehouse by fire. It is owned by the Hotchandani family.
