Critics said they never should have gone to Guatemala, the government offered to pay them if they stayed, but Belize’s national football team today defended the jewel on hostile territory and tonight, amidst all the shame of playing a home game in a Guatemala, there’s reason to feel some relief because Belize’s national football team shelled St. Kitts in the first

game of their World Cup qualifying match.

The game ended 3 to 1 in favor of Belize. The first goal was scored by Belizean Deon McCauley in the 6th minute. St. Kitts got in a goal in the 13th minute but 7 minutes after that – at the 21st minute - Belize’s Harrison Roches scored goal two for Belize. And 19 minutes later, Belize’s Deon McCauley struck again, scoring Belize’s third – and what would be the last goal of the game.

The team is scheduled to return to Belize tomorrow in time to vote. Their return match against St. Kitts is in late March. The win is big because St. Kitts bragged that the low-ranked Belize didn’t stand a chance. Of course, the stain of having won a home game in Guatemala, will, we suspect, leave a permanent asterisk affixed to this win.
