The new farmers market in Cayo was opened earlier this week. It cost of $500,000 and was financed by the European Union. Phase 1 of the market construction consists of 15 permanent stalls, an area for temporary stalls, a bathroom module, a garbage facility and an administrative unit. The Town Council of San Ignacio/Santa Elena also contributed $45,000 and that gave the mayor rights to give a speech on the wisdom of the market place.
John August, Mayor – San Ignacio/Santa Elena
“The market will serve as a hub and a tourist attraction where visitors come to experience this vibrant, weekly event. For the majority of farmers and vendors this is the sole venue for showcasing their goods and produce.”
Hon. Erwin Contreras, Minister of Economic Development
“In our culture, a market quickly becomes the hub of development, not only as a center of exchange for rural goods and services but also as a center for sharing information, innovations, and other resources among entrepreneurs and investors for rural development.”
The market is part of the Belize Rural Development Programme.
