And it’s also the City Council’s ongoing second anniversary celebration. Every other week, the Mayor serves the homeless in Battlefield Park. Today was the anniversary special – with tempting desserts. The Mayor told us why she does it – and how she gets by with help from her friends.
Zenaida Moya, Mayor of Belize City
“Well it sends a message, we must never forget the homeless. Anyone of us can become a homeless person. The most successful person, let’s say they become a substance abuse person, they can also become homeless. We have people from all level, we see people who are once politicians getting food from us. I am a politician right now. I feel that we must never forget them. Just now some people were telling me why am I giving it to them because those people didn’t vote, these people don’t vote. For me this isn’t about who can vote for me, for me this is something we owe to these individuals who are not as fortunate as us. So whether or not they went there and voted for us, whether or not they will go there and vote for us, whether or not they can vote or even own a voter’s ID – that is not it. It is to remind them that we care for them.
Mr. Jack Charles is somebody that just stands out to me. He doesn’t have to do this. He said, ‘Mayor if it means we have to give more.’ Right now we are giving 250 meals to the homeless every two weeks. I spoke to him and I said there are more people that need this assistance. He says if it is 300 or 350 persons who will assist, next time just let us know- let us know how much more groceries you need.”
In other City Council news Anthony Michael has been re-elected as the city’s deputy mayor. This is his second term. He is also responsible for works, streets and drains.
In less upbeat news from City Hall 7NEWS is reliably informed today the council had to take the decision to fire one of the Mayor’s brothers who was working in information systems. 7NEWS has received reports which say that other employees felt that he was endangering their safety. As we understand it, he was escorted out of the building this morning.
