Shoppers know that flour is scarce, but ADM Belize Limited which makes Belize’s flour says there should be no shortage because their production has been very high. According to a press release, in March the mill produced 29,000 cwt – that’s $2.9 million pounds of flour. That’s more than the 2.5 million pounds of flour normally consumed. ADM Belize Mills says its working along with the government and Bakers Association to determine the cause of the shortage.
Information to 7NEWS says that it has a lot to do with the very high cost of wheat worldwide and the fact that Belize’s controlled price is significantly lower than the market price in Mexico and Guatemala. So flour produced here is then contrabanded out through the western and northern border.
