Government continues its effort to get back US$10 million in Venezuelan grant money from the Belize Bank. The Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Delroy Cuthkelvin today reported that on Friday Solicitor General Tanya Longsworth and government’s attorney Michael Young sent the Belize Bank a letter demanding return of the money within two working days.

According to Cuthkelvin the Belize Bank replied by saying that its interpretation of the agreement is different and asked the government to withdraw its letter of demand. Curthkelvin says government will not do that. In fact, by end of business tomorrow, it plans to file a civil suit against the Belize Bank for recovery of the US$10 million.

Contacted this evening, Belize Bank President Phil Johnson would only say that the bank’s does not feel that government’s claim has merit and they will dispute it. Cuthkelvin says, the government will not be intimidated and will stand firm on its position. Meaning, they’ll see each other in court, and if bank principal Michael Ashcroft holds form, we’re sure that will include every courtroom from Belize City to the British Isles.
