But that’s just the first round, Ashcroft-related matters will be appearing in court all this week – and on Friday the billionaire sent out a statement about his involvement with BTL. In it, Ashcroft says he doesn’t own BTL, it is owned, over 90% of it, by an employees’ trust and charities. But while he disavows direct ownership – Ashcroft does not disclaim the assertion that he controls BTL.

And Ashcroft says that seems to have become just the problem as BTL is on the market to be sold. He says it appears he’s getting in the way of the sale by trying to secure certain assurances for BTL. And so he says, he’s getting out of the picture, and appointing independent fiduciaries to represent BTL shareholders in negotiations.

Ashcroft’s statement ends thusly, “simply put, I no longer have a horse in this race. Good luck Belize, if you choose to fight each other.” C_ute, but seems to us, that whoever he appoints will act in his interests. BTL is worth over $200 million, which even to a billionaire is not child’s play.
