Earlier this week, we told you about the hikes on ticket prices for Caye Caulker and San Pedro water taxis. Even though fuel prices are at a record high, it came as quite a shock ahead of the Easter season, the time of year when most Belizeans choose to use these services.

But those price hikes, it seems, won't stand and that's because The Port Authority has put out the following release calling the move illegal, unlawful, and not to be tolerated. They've also released standard approved fares for water taxi services. Notably, the most popular routes of Belize City to Caye Caulker and San Pedro are - by law - restricted to a maximum of $35 dollars for a round trip to Caye Caulker, and $55 dollars for a round trip to San Pedro.

The release also says, quote: "Commuters are advise...to report any attempts by water taxi operators to charge more than the approved rate." End quote

Now, any operator found guilty of unauthorized price gouging is liable to risk a loss of their license and to be subject to a fine of up to $5,000.00 for each overpriced ticket sold.
