Tonight a fuel tanker remains impounded at the Customs compound in Punta Gorda Town. It was intercepted early this morning between 1:00 and 1:30 am when the immigration Department got a tip that the tanker was seen moving across to the Guatemalan side. Reports say it came back across quickly - and the border personnel - which include BAHA, Immigration and a cattle checker seems to have turned a blind eye.
But a joint patrol of police, customs and Immigration was activated and intercepted the tanker near San Pedro, Columbia. It has Belizean plates and originated in Cayo. Inside were a pair of brothers, driver, Noe Daniel Villeda and Selvin Danilo Villeda.
Both of them were detained and escorted to the Punta Gorda Police Station along with the Fuel Truck.
We are told customs has suspicions about the origin of the fuel inside the tanker - because of the suspect circumstances under which it was caught. But, report suggest documentation has been provided to suggest a local supply source - which still would not explain the cross border movements at minutes past midnight. So, for the meanwhile, the tanker remains impounded, while Customs investigates the possibility that it could be smuggling contraband.
