Seafront property - from Punta Gorda to Corozal and in all the islands, it's the most prized land in all of Belize. But what if you bought saffron property and then found out that instead of seeing the Caribbean blue, you'd be seeing someone else's back yard!?

That's the real estate nightmare that 5 American landowners fear they could face on northern Caye Caulker. They bought sea front properties in private transactions and have been using their life savings to develop those properties as retirement homes.

But, last week it came to their attention that two persons had applied for the land on the seabed in front of their seafront properties. Now, you can't sell the seabed - or at least that's what the law says - but it does happen - and these property owners - along with their attorney are sounding the alarm because they fear it could happen to them. We spoke to them and their attorney via Zoom:

We spoke with the CEO in the Ministry of Resources who stressed that Minister Cordel will not sign or approve such an application. Perera, though, said that this kind of thing has happened before under the UDP in 2015:
