We're in the year of municipal elections - but city hall may be going through a year of living dangerously - in financial terms at least.

Multiple credible reports tell 7news that the council's Director of Finance has today tendered his resignation - reportedly effective in a week.

Reports say this happens just as the council is facing a serious cash crunch and may have to turn to central government for funding assistance. We should note that acute and chronic cash crises are nothing new for successive PUDP councils, but we are told this one is quite dire.

We'll follow up on the story next week.
