Tonight, the standoff remains between ASR BSI and the BSCFA - and even at this hour, government continues to try to negotiate with the cane farmers to reach a compromise with the mill.
We can report that they are close. Our reports say that the cane farmers association is close to accepting a 3 year commercial agreement with ASR BSI - with a non binding review at the two year mark. Again, that is proposed, but has not been signed. And they have not accepted.
But at a press conference this afternoon in Orange Walk, Javier Keme, the Chairman of the BSCFA Finance Committee gave the strongest indication that an agreement was in the offing with this update:
Javier Keme, Chairman, Finance Committee
"As a short update on where we are right now, we are left will the only option to swallow the only proposal on the table which is the proposal of the mill. We have to find a way as producers to live with it, to survive this last battle because this is not a win win. It can never be a win win it is a win for the mill as always been."
