And with only two more days left in the year, the ComPol is also hoping that the murder count stays below 90. Right now, there have been about 86 murders so far for 2023, and the Compol says they wanted it to be lower, but even though Christmas weekend was a violent one, it's still a major reduction from last year.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"The closing of the year looking at our crime outlook, I was a bit more optimistic that the figure would have been less than it currently is but you know at the end, the last weekend we had three murders over the Christmas holiday and that certainly threw a monkey wrench into our statistics, nonetheless, the decrease that we're seeing this year is still far more significant that we have seen in other years. We should be closing off the year with a murder count south of the 100 number mark and that for us is a great achievement but while we do see it as a great achievement, we are still saddened at the loss of lives, all those persons who died in 2023. People are still left grieving and so every murder that does occur is a tremendous loss to society but as a department we will continue to do our utmost best to see what we can do with the support of our partner agencies to continue to save lives."
