The Emancipation Day weekend of August first to the third was also a GST free weekend - but that didn't stop folks from rushing over to Melchor. According to the statistics posted on the Belize Immigration website there were 214 more Belizeans arriving at the border on the GST Free August first 2025, than there were on August first, 20204, which was a regular GST day. It's not a huge difference, but one local Melchor news outlet noted, quote, "Today, there is a reported significant increase in both vehicle and pedestrian traffic at the Guatemalan customs checkpoint located in Melchor de Mencos, Petén."
As for the northern border at Santa Elena Corozal, there were only 24 more Belizeans arriving on August first 2025, than on the same date in August 2024.
