BEL has secured a 27.5 million US dollar loan and grant package from the Caribbean Development Bank to roll out a nationwide smart metering system and modernize Belize's electricity grid.
A release says the financing will fund the installation of about 115,000 smart meters, allowing near real-time monitoring, improved customer service, and stronger grid reliability, along with studies to support future renewable energy expansion.
It is the largest loan CDB has ever provided to BEL and the first issued without a Government of Belize guarantee. The three-year rollout is already underway, starting in Belize City, Placencia, and Ambergris Caye, with nationwide coverage to follow.
