It was former Coast Guard Commandant Elton Bennett's last luncheon with his fellow guardsmen. And while he says he leaves them in good faith, we asked him about his successor and if he believes captain Gregory Soberanis is the right man for the job.

"Are you confident that Soberanis will be able to fill your shoes?"
Elton Bennett, CEO, Ministry of Home Affairs
"I would like for you to rephrase that question, what I can say is that Captain Soberanis is a highly qualified officer, he has done it all in terms of his operational assignments, he has done it all in terms of his academic courses and his achievements. You would have noticed earlier this year that he came back from the National Defense University with a leadership award and so you are looking at him being among the greatest military leaders that attend that institution. You are also looking at 2016, I believe, when he achieved a similar award at the Naval Staff College where he was recognized for his leadership. So his track record speaks to itself and he is a very competent officer. The men and women of the Belize Coast Guard will continue to find a good leader in captain Soberanis."
