Before the Easter break, you heard from the Belize Bus Association. They said that with the rise in fuel cost, they were barely keeping staying afloat financially. They asked the government for one of three things: to absorb the cost of tax of the fuel, to provide them with a subsidy, or to allow them to raise fares.
The Ministry of Transport responded today, completely taking the third option off the table. As it relates to the other two, they said, quote, "Cabinet respectfully requests that your membership exercise some patience as we await to see how the global world trend in fuel cost will go. It is anticipated that this trend may not continue much longer and will result in the stabilization and reduction in the acquisition of fuel." End quote.
They added that is Cabinet believes the situation will continue for an extended period, they are prepared to revisit the requests for further consideration.
