It's the kind of accident that is a near miss many nights on the Hummingbird Highway's deadly one lane bridges. But Friday night there was no near miss for Gregory Turner who suffered a direct hit from an oncoming vehicle. He told police that he was traveling on the Hummingbird Highway towards Belmopan when crossing a bridge between mile 25 and 26. A Chevy pickup coming from the opposite direction also attempted to cross the bridge. Turner reported that the oncoming vehicle was approaching at very high speeds and the driver ran off the road, hit his car, slammed into the railing of the bridge and plunged headlong into the river below. It was driven by Brian Benguche and his passenger Nelson Sheppard received head and body injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Southern Regional Hospital. Castillo sustained an abrasion to his left hand and foot while Flores and Benguche received minor injuries and were treated and released. Police are investigating before charges are laid.
