They may have the death of Gian Godoy to explain, but prison authorities were busy today cracking down on the thriving drug trade within the prison walls. A multi-agency drug raid employing the services of the Police Dragon Unit was orchestrated today and it netted half a kilo of marijuana. Superintendent Errol Gentle explains that more than any single activity, the drug trade meaningfully undermines effective prison administration and orderliness.
Errol Gentle, Prisons Superintendent "We found three parcels of marijuana, and they weighed about one lb. and a half in total. This happens on a weekly basis, so we have to be on our P's and Q's. We have to stay alert. A couple weeks ago, if you remember, there was an issue where we found an officer, a very junior officer, and he had to be handed over to the police. The prison... because of the situation of the prison, because we have chain-linked walls, sometimes it is very easy to get stuff over the fence. We have had civilians trying to smuggle drugs into the prison, we have had people trying to bring drugs in their body parts, in their underwear. Recently we had a junior officer who was bribed by the inmates and he was bringing it in his shoes. You know, the inmates themselves, when they go out on work gangs, when they come in we have to check them thoroughly, because they can't get it elsewhere, so somebody has to bring it in and it's a requirement. People in here, you have inmates in here who use drugs, and they are not allowed to go out on the streets, so, somehow, they have to get their drugs. We have to ensure that we are always alert and all our security measures are in place to stop it.
