A well known police officer is going to prison - on remand for shooting another man.
Yesterday morning at 2:00 am in San Ignacio town, Corporal Julio Shal is alleged to have shot Pedro Guzman as he stood on the street in front of a local restaurant. Shal - who appeared to have been drinking - told Guzman that he was being taken in for questioning - but instead he took him to an secluded area on Liberty street where Shal is alleged to have shot him in the right arm.
According to our reports, the two had a misunderstanding earlier in the night. But the senior command doesn't want to hear it and in a release, says it will not tolerate what is called "bad policing". After an investigation, 31-year-old Corporal Shal was arrested and charged with attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm, and possession of firearm while under the influence of alcohol. The court viewed it as a serious offence and today; he was remanded into custody at the Hattieville Prison until April 29th.
