Opening tonight at the Institute of Mexico in Belize is an art exhibit entitled 'dialogo meridiano.'

It features two artists from Merida: Gerardo Espejo and Elilio Salazar Touche. Today we spoke to Espejo to get an insight into his creative process.

Alfonso Noble Reporting,
44-year-old self-taught artist Gerardo Espejo says he tries to capture the real world and encapsulate it into pieces of art that would inspire thought and even psychological analysis.

Gerardo Espejo, Artist
"I find things to work on that would be common to other people can identify with. So they can know what I am thinking or feeling."

"A lot of people try to play as if they are psychological or analytical and they try to find out how I was feeling when I painted something."

And the ability that Espejo's art has to grab the audience attention is evident by the detail put into the pieces. Each in magnet-like manner attracts and retains attention. And Espejo says his art pieces almost always causes interaction between the viewer and the piece.

Gerardo Espejo,
"The piece gets them to not just be passive viewers. I want them to create something after looking at my work. I put a lot of questions in my work."

And those questions are evident by the pieces that indeed inspire more than just the ordinary perception of reality more like a questioning of it.

The exhibit opens tonight and runs until April 23rd.
