Convicted rapist and alleged murderer, Luis Gabriel Urbina Jr. is back in police custody tonight after a bold escape from the Corozal police-holding cell yesterday.
24 hours after he escaped, Urbina was hunted down and collared in a cane field just outside Xaibe Village in Corozal this afternoon. Police say Urbina put up a fight and advanced towards officers with a machete. In return, they shot him in both legs and he is tonight at the Corozal Town Hospital under what we suspect is heavy police guard. Once he is well enough he will be transported to the Hattieville Prison to begin a 13-year prison sentence for the rape, kidnapping, and unnatural crime conviction.
Urbina along with Omar Vellos and Mark Vega were convicted on Tuesday. Justice Adolph Lucas sentenced all three to 10 years for the kidnapping conviction and 13 years for the rape conviction. Even though Urbina was on the run and missed he sentenced, the hammer still came down and he got an extra 8 years for the unnatural crime conviction. But all three men will only serve a total of 13 years each since the sentences are to run concurrently.
Their troubles don't end after the 13 years because they are still awaiting trial for the murder of Susanna Petkan, which occurred on June 13th of 2002.
