Under the theme: "Water For Life," today worldwide celebrations were held to mark Earth Day.
In Belize there was a tree planting ceremony in Belmopan City with the Governor General Sir Colville Young, 'Garden City' Mayor Anthony Chanona, and Minister of Natural Resources Hon. John Briceno.
Briceno used the opportunity to make a plea for Belizeans to take care of our water.
Hon. John Briceno, Minister of Natural Resources
"Everything that we do entails or needs water. When we are at home we need water to bathe, to cook, to wash-up, to wash our dishes and our clothes and everything. When you look at industries, for the factories to work they need water. For agriculture for us to have food on the table we need water and that is why it is very important for us to learn to protect and conserve the water that we have."
"Whenever we abuse water, we are abusing ourselves. That is why I am asking, I am begging you that we need to learn to protect the water that we have in Belize."
The tree planted by Mayor Anthony Chanona is a "November shower."
Belize boasts 18 rivers and 22 watersheds.
