He was accused of killing his wife by beating her with his bare fists and today Gilbert Mayen was sentenced for his crime.
Mayen who was originally accused of murder appeared before Justice Troadio Gonzalez where his Attorney Merlene Moody arranged a plea bargain. Mayen then pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. Before sentencing Mayen said that he did not intend to kill his wife and that it was an accident. His attorney also entered a mitigation plea after which he was sentenced to 15 years in jail.
On August 15 of 2002 Mayen and his common law wife Pauline Williams had a drunken argument at their home in Roaring River Village, near Belmopan. Testimony revealed that he beat her until he fell asleep and woke the next morning to find her dead.
