The week began with two murders one in the Belize district and the other in Orange Walk.
We begin in Belize where a 25 year old businessman was shot multiple times as he himself had gone to Salt Creek Range at mile 13 on the Northern Highway. It is another unexplained murder and today we spoke to family members looking for answers.
Alfonso Noble Reporting,
Family members of 25-year-old businessman Nadir Husman visited the Salt Creek Range at mile 13 this morning in the hopes of coming up with answers to the death of the young man but as much as they tried all they could come up with was more questions. They could only begin to answer these with what they knew for sure.
Lisa Byford, Victim’s Girlfriend
“In the morning the last time I saw him was about 11 when he dropped me off at my parent’s house to drop off a father’s day card. He then said he was going shooting and so he kissed me and said he would be back in 30 minutes.” [Sobbing]
Alfonso Noble,
He didn’t come back?
Lisa Byford, Victim’s Girlfriend
“He didn’t come back in thirty minutes. But the thing is I had asked him to return a bag to my aunt’s house, which is just about 3 minutes away from the range. A dress was in the bag for her and he took it there knowing that she has kids and everything. It is easy for him to get sidetracked and everything so I didn’t worry about it. At about 2:30 I started to worry. This was more than half an hour and he still had not come back for me. I called him twice from my mom’s phone and no answer. [Sobbing] At about 2:45 I called again and still no answer. I also called his brother’s house to find out if he was there and nobody answered.”
Husman's girlfriend Lisa Byford says she continued to try to reach him on his phone but was unable to do so as there was no answer. It was at around 3 that she called her aunt where Husman had made the delivery and he was not there.
Lisa Byford,
“Then I called my aunt and asked her if he had been up there and why is he taking so long. She said that he must still be at the range because she still heard gunshots behind there. This was at 3 so I said okay he is just shooting and having fun.”
“When he didn’t at 8 p.m. I left home [Starting to sob] and went to his dad’s house looking for him and he was not there. That is when I asked his brother to bring us here at the range because that is where he said he would have been. When he were driving…[Sobbing]…I saw the vehicle in the dark and the lights from the vehicle we were in showed the reflectors from off his vehicle. When we got there he was laid down on the ground with blood…everywhere.”[Breaking down in tears]
Husman had been shot as many as eight times to the torso head and back. Now investigators are gathering evidence to put this murder together. In this they are looking at Husman’s vehicle
Inspector Albert Kelly, Police Investigator
“From what we observed when we reached on the scene, Nadir Husman was found on the driver’s side of the vehicle. However as you notice there is blood on the passenger side seat as well as the driver side seat. Also there are bloodstains at the back of the vehicle and at the front. So at this time we are still trying to piece it together and determine exactly where he was shot. One bullet was found lodged in the passenger side door. We are still trying to find out what caliber of firearm was used in this incident. His weapon is still missing along with a cellular phone.”
Alfonso Noble,
What kind of gun was it?
Albert Kelly,
“It’s a 9 millimeter pistol that is missing at this time.”
And police know the gun is missing because Husman had come to the firing range to fire off a few rounds but all indications are that he did not have a chance to do it as all his equipment was found inside his vehicle.
Inspector Albert Kelly,
“We are still not sure if Mr. Nadir did in fact do any target practice because as we see his target board is still inside the pan of the vehicle so we are not sure at this time.”
And while police are not sure neither are family members sure of the motive for the attack as his mother Yvonne Moore says that he did not have any enemies. Even his shooting at the range was something out of the norm for him.
Yvonne Moore, Victim’s Mother
“He doesn’t have a pattern. He has no pattern to come out here and shoot. It is once in a blue moon. We don’t know of him having any enemies or being in conflict with anyone. It is pure speculation at this point. Police have no leads. Nothing.”
Lisa Byford, Victim’s Girlfriend
“We need answers. We have lots of questions and we need answers because Nadir is a very peaceful person and he doesn’t trouble anyone. He goes straight from work to home. His only friend was his brother. He didn’t have problems with anyone.”
“I don’t know what I think right now. Nadir was killed and it was uncalled for. Whoever did it is just heartless and cold and cruel and everything like that. Whosoever did it, doesn’t matter who, it could be his own brother of anybody in the family...somebody has to pay.”
A post mortem today verified that there were 15 wounds to Husman's body and 7 slugs were recovered. While police do not have a motive family members today told us that Nadir Husman had been receiving threatening phone calls over the past few days.
