It could have been just another statistic tabbed on to the mounting tally of murders, but a Belize city man is miraculously alive after being shot multiple times early this morning in downtown Belize City.

At around 12:30 a.m. 41 year old Herbert Wiltshire was walking home on North Front street, when, at the intersection with Pickstock Street a black Suzuki sidekick pulled up alongside him. A man then called to Wiltshire but he did not respond and as he was walking away the man, described as dark skinned with dreadlocks, pulled out a handgun and shot him in the back. Wiltshire responded to the attack and began to struggle with the assailant who shot him four more times to the jaw and neck but not before Wiltshire bit him in the shoulder.

Police say he is in critical condition and Wiltshire this afternoon underwent emergency surgery. As for the gunman and any possible leads, police have impounded a vehicle matching the description Wiltshire gave them as well as the driver of the vehicle a 33-year-old man. It's of note that Wiltshire's brother Trevor Wiltshire was shot to death at the Salt Creek range early last year. That murder has still not been solved.
