It was an outrageous crime on April 27th when businessman Phillip Galatty was ambushed by armed thugs on the northern highway near a primary school. Today, nearly three months later, police made the first arrests.
In Magistrate's court Frank Eligio and Kenrick Reneau were arraigned on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit robbery. Separately Eligio will additionally face charges of attempted murder, robbery, grievous harm, and use of deadly means of harm. He will face those charges along with at least three other suspects who we understand police are closing in on. Today both men were denied bail until their court appearance on August 12th.
If Eligio's name sounds familiar it is because he has been before the court 32 times before and was more recently charged for the Belize Bank robbery. In requesting that bail is denied, the Prosecutor noted the boldness of the crime near a school and also mentioned that Galatty is still out of the country recovering which, according to our information is inaccurate.
During the attempted murder/robbery, 2 briefcases were stolen however what exactly their contained is still a mystery. Police believe that the jackers were told that Galatty would be travelling with large amounts of money.
