Between Wednesday and Friday of last week police received reports that a couple of men were making big money purchases from large businesses in Belize city with fraudulent government checks. On September 2nd. Dean Gillett allegedly took a government of Belize check to Mirab where he ordered 17,550 dollars worth of
merchandise. He allegedly did the same on September 3, this time at Golden Bay company where he ordered 4,080 dollars worth of merchandise.
It didn't take long before the police caught up with Gillett, a Lord's Bank resident, at an area in Sandhill where they recovered most of the ill gotten hardware, including a gas range, a 3 piece sofa set, a washing machine, dryer, washbasin and 300 tiles.
He was today taken to magistrate's court before Earl Jones where he was charged with two counts of handling stolen property to which he pleaded not guilty. Despite prosecutor inspector Linden Flowers' request that the court deny bail, he was granted and met 6 thousand dollars bail. But Gillett was kept in custody to be assessed with further charges, presumably forgery, uttering a forged document and obtaining property by deception will follow for using the fake checques. But
before those charges could be prepared, Gillett escaped. That's right, he managed to bolt free from his police escort as he was being taken from court back to the police station.
