They were caught with $180,000 in cash in broad daylight on Partridge Street in Belize City but charges of money launder have been dropped against Anthony William Johnson, Karil Meighan, and Joseph Garbutt.
Yesterday, Public Prosecutor Carlo Mason appeared before Chief Magistrate Herbert Lord to tell him that the DPP's office will not be proceeding with the money laundering charge. It will, though, maintain the charge for unlawful possession of property specifically the $180,000 stash.
It's a cute situation because being found guilty of unlawful possession carries only a very minor fine of $250. But the trick is if the three accused men plead guilty and take the fine they will forfeit all of the $180,000 which they would have been judged to possess unlawfully.
As you may recall, at 11:00 am on June 10, Corporal Edison Palacio made what the police have described as a routine search on a Mercedes Benz car on Partridge Street and found a plastic bag in the front seat with $180,000 in cash.
