It is the second murder recorded in Belize for 2005 and it is a particularly gruesome one as last night a 24-year-old man was shot in the head and thrown out on the northern highway, dead. Now family members are questioning the motivation of the killing while the police are looking for the person or persons responsible. We today visited with the distressed aunt of Delrick Sankey who said her nephew had a dire premonition of his own undoing.
Alfonso Noble Reporting,
The body of 24-year-old Delrick Sankey was found in an area on the southern approach to the Haulover Bridge sometime around 10:30 last night. Pearl Kelly is Sankey's aunt; she recalls when she got the news last night.
Pearl Kelly, Victim's aunt
"About 10:30 I was called out of my bed and they let me know that my nephew was hot in his neck and he was dead on the spot on northern highway. I understand he was with a friend but who, I don't know. We are gathering stories but not as yet, we haven't come up with anything as yet...just rumors. We just don't know."
While the family does not know who killed Sankey Kelly says that when she last spoke to him yesterday afternoon he was deeply distressed to the point where he was crying and fearing that it would be the last time he would speak to his aunt.
Pearl Kelly,
"He wasn't kind of happy, he was sad. He said it could be anytime now. I told him not to think like that and he walked away and he left with tears in his eyes and that was the last time I saw him."
Alfonso Noble,
So you think somebody was threatening him or that kind of thing?
Pearl Kelly,
"I believe there were threatening him."
It seems now that those threats actually materialized when his body was found on the northern highway last night and now his aunt says she now finds herself lost in grief.
Pearl Kelly,
"I don't know why they would want to shoot my nephew. I love my nephew, I don't know why they would want to kill him. I love him so much. He is the one that always consoles me, because I am unfortunate with men, and he always is here for me when I am down. I don't know what I'll do without him. God please kill all these people that are hurting me because I don't think he deserved that shooting. He is a changed, changed complete person. I don't know why they killed him. His mother is in the states and I don't know how she will take it and I don't know if she will be able to come for the funeral but with God's help I wish that she would come. I just want to tell him, whatever he does, will come back to him. Maybe it won't be through a shooting but God will be his salvation. I am not a real Christian but I have God in me and salvation will come to him. What he does in life, so shall he reap."
A post mortem showed that Sankey received a single gunshot to the back of the left ear. Police already have a suspects, who is a relative of the dead man's neighbor. At this time, police say the killing may be drug-related.
