He was accused of killing a fellow inmate at the Hattieville Prison on June 17th of 2003 and today Phillip Tillet faced a jury for the crime. After deliberating for three hours that jury found Tillet guilty of the stabbing death of twenty two year old Kirk Belisle. After the verdict Tillet was vented his anger to our cameras, saying he was only trying to help out a fallen prisoner and for that he's been found guilty of murder.
Phillip Tillet, Convicted of Murder
"I want unu know this is no kind of justice, the youths in Belize are suffering and this is what they will do with a man at prison who is trying to do his best. There is nothing like someone to teach another. Right now they done sentence me, well not sentence me but said I am guilty for murder, which is something I don't got any knowledge about. All I was trying to do was help but this is what they do with somebody, a 26 year old youth who is in his 8th year at prison and this is what they are doing with a ghetto youth. I am here to stand up for all the ghetto youths because it is like a brain wash happening, they are trying to trick people in this place. I will speak out for the youths because we need justice; this is no kind of justice."
Alfonso Noble,
Will you appeal?
Phillip Tillet,
"Yes I will appeal because it's no justice. If somebody is trying to help on a crime scene why would they convict that man."
Sentencing was deferred until a later date.
