Shockwaves went out across the community on the evening of April 29th of 2003 when widely known storekeeper Alvan Godfrey was shot as he tended his neighborhood grocery on 6th Street in Belize City. Godfrey survived a few weeks and finally succumbed to his injuries on June 5th. At the time police charged two men for the killing: Karim Molina and Louis Gillett. Molina's case never made it past Magistrate's Court, but today Gillett faced a jury in Supreme Court.
After 4 hours of deliberation they came out with a guilty verdict after which, trial judge Adolph Lucas asked Gillett if he had anything to say. Gillett told the court that he would appeal the case because the jury has cursed him. He said he would not have gone to shoot anyone on his birthday. With that the case was adjourned until March 10th for the defense's mitigation plea and sentencing.
