For 20 years she had been just a regular unsung hero but now Belizean nurse Margaret Juan is a regional hero and her praises have been sung across the region. Nurse Juan came out on top in the 2004 First Caribbean Bank's Unsung Hero Competition. For more than 2 decades the 60 year old has been offering free health care, daycare, and refuge for battered women in San Jose Succotz village at the 'Good Shepherd Clinic.' She was chosen as the national winner for Belize last year and a regional panel of judges awarded her the top regional prize from among two other finalists. She was honored at an awards dinner in Barbados last month. In addition to her prizes as a National Unsung Hero, Nurse Juan got an extra US7,500 and a trophy. The search for more Unsung Heroes resumes in June.
